Single: Nightshift

Nightshift is a breezy and rhythmic single that poises Balu Brigada at the forefront of NZ music month. Unlocking just the right mix of indie rock and tender hip-hop, the three brothers and a bestie balance their influences like seasoned pros. While the reigning aesthetic in the charts right now is to navigate with equal parts grime and gloom, Balu Brigada firmly abstain from these norms. They know their sound and affinity for multiple genres without question. Akin to an eclectic scroggin, their daring signature is to stack the ideas. Nightshift is no exception with pulsing keys, an unbridled beat and what sounds like a snake charmer’s kazoo haunting the chorus. As the lyrics suggest, it’s a ‘twisted love affair’ that serenades the ears with words that are playfully elegant and direct. Nightshift is remarkably accomplished, channelling Timberlake like backing vocals with a groove that tips its hat to Pharrell. Gunning for a spot in the same pop pantheon that they worship, Balu Brigada is a charismatic showcase of Kiwi creativity.
